Dr. Al Benskin

A Life of Service & Leadership

Born in San Antonio and raised in Killeen, Texas, Dr. Al Benskin's journey reflects a journey of resilience, learning, and purpose. The son of Alvin, who emigrated from Panama City, and a mother from Anniston, Alabama, he graduated from Killeen High School before pursuing higher education on an athletic scholarship. His quest for knowledge equipped him for the field of education at multiple levels.

Dr. Benskin spent 20 distinguished years in the United States Marine Corps, serving as a Staff Non-Commissioned Officer, and deployed to every continent except Antarctica. His military career was marked by leadership roles such as Platoon Sargent, Section Leader, and Battalion Substance Abuse Officer, earning awards including the Meritorious Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal with four stars, Naval Arctic Service Ribbon, and Recruiting Service Ribbon, among others. Upon honorable discharge, he seamlessly transitioned his skills to education, founding the Junior Cadet Corps Program in DeSoto ISD and leading as Assistant Principal and Principal in several Texas schools before assuming his role as Director of Challenge Academy and High School of Choice, where he has championed initiatives forging early college pathways for students.

Dr. Benskin's commitment to "Every student, every chance, every day to learn and succeed" is reflected not only in his career but also in his family. He and his wife, Sheila, live in DeSoto and are the proud parents of Christy, Stedman, and Connor. His professional certifications, published works, and deep service have left an indelible mark on students, staff, and communities, exemplifying the transformative power of education and dedication.
