Students portray their ‘inspiration’ in Dual Language Art Contest

A variety of art projects were created for the Dual Language Art Contest during Youth Art Month.

Dual language staff members noticed the incredibly talented students as they visited classrooms this year, and saw an opportunity for kids to exercise their creativity. In the first-ever Dual Language Art Contest, a total of 102 entries were submitted between Dunaway and Wedgeworth Elementary students in grades kindergarten through fifth.

“We were happily surprised by the number of entries we had,” said WISD Bilingual Coordinator Ginger Aleman. “Due to the amazing turnout, we decided to award a first through third-place winner and an honorable mention at each grade level.”

Art submissions revolved around the theme, "What inspires you?"

We enjoyed seeing the creativity of each student and how they chose to represent their personal inspiration,” Aleman said. “There were a wide range of topics chosen from nature to family and things kids love. Most of the entries we received were drawings, but there were also painted canvases and some 3-D entries.”

Dual language staff personally delivered winning certificates to Dunaway and Wedgeworth students on March 31, 2021. First place winners even received autographed art posters from Mirelle Ortega, a children’s book illustrator and animator, who was a guest speaker during Hispanic Heritage Month.

It is important for our students to see Latino artists who are successful in their craft and who highlight their culture in their work,” Aleman noted.

The director of the movie “The Book of Life,” Jorge Gutierrez, also donated signed art posters to the students. Gutierrez is also an animator, painter, writer, voice actor, and product designer.

The dual-language department staff hopes to make the art contest an annual event as it provided dual language students an opportunity to showcase their artistic abilities.
