Waxahachie ISD has been awarded a discretionary grant for $295,200.00 for purchasing school buses in the 2019-2020 school year. This grant was awarded through the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the Texas Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Program. Grants were awarded as part of a settlement agreement in the litigation between the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Volkswagen (VW) and its related entities.
Governor Greg Abbott selected the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) as the lead agency responsible for the administration of funds received from the Volkswagen State Environmental Mitigation Trust (Trust). A minimum of $209 million dollars will be made available for projects that reduce nitrogen oxides (NOX) in the environment. WISD applied for the funding in June and received its notification of grant award last month.
WISD Director of Transportation Tiffany Rivera said, “This grant will provide needed funds to our district for the purpose of purchasing new buses. WISD will also be able to put more environmentally friendly vehicles on the road and help to reduce unwanted emissions.”Funds provided under the Trust are awarded through competitive grants to governmental and non-governmental entities in accordance with the priorities established in the Mitigation Plan.
