Wilemon STEAM Academy Becomes Third Campus in Nation to Receive NISE Certifications

Waxahachie ISD’s Wilemon STEAM Academy, a K-5 elementary campus focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math, has received the distinguished honor of being just the third campus in the nation to receive a national campus certification for STEM Excellence along with a national certification for STEM Teaching for all classroom teachers and administrators.

“The teachers at Wilemon STEAM Academy exemplify being life-long learners,” said Dr. Bonny Cain, Waxahachie ISD Superintendent. “We are so proud of these amazing educators for their hard work and desire to continue to hone their craft. Their students and our district are lucky to have them.”

Wilemon STEAM Academy, which is in its first year of operation, started the certification process in May 2018, three months before the campus opened. Staff members began their certification in June 2018.

“As we were working to build the curriculum programs at Wilemon, we realized we wanted to do more than just focus on the STEAM subjects – we wanted our campus to truly exemplify STEM education,” said Shelle Blaylock, Assistant Superintendent of Leadership and Academics for Waxahachie ISD. “Achieving the campus and teacher certifications from NISE is proof that Wilemon’s teachers and administrators embody the STEM principles each day in their classrooms.”

The National Institute for STEM Education certifies teachers, campuses, and districts in STEM teaching. Using a competency-based, academic coach-led online learning platform, educators produce a portfolio of work that demonstrates proficiency across 15 STEM teacher actions.

Waxahachie ISD will host a celebration for Wilemon’s accomplishment on Friday, May 24, at 1:30 p.m. in the Wilemon Gymnasium.
